Holiday Kitchen Safety Tips

With Thanksgiving only a few days away, many families are putting their homes in order for the annual food and festivities. For some people the most important part of this holiday is an extravagant meal, for others it is football or the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. While most of us are only spectators for the latter two, preparing for the holiday feast is well within our control, and the most important part of that preparation is maintaining safety in the kitchen.


Two of the most common risks that take place in the kitchen are cutting hazards and fires. Each of these risks are typically a result of being inattentive and can usually be avoided. Don’t let your attention be pulled away from the task at hand from a distraction – this can be difficult with the children and their cousins running around with boundless energy – be sure not to leave what you are cooking unattended for too long and focus intently until you have finished any chopping or cutting. Below are several tips for working in the kitchen safely and successfully for the holiday.

Knife Safety:

-          Cut in the direction away from your body.

-          Keep fingers and thumbs out of the way of the cutting line.

-          Never try to rush a cutting, slicing, or chopping task.

-          Store knives in a designated area when they are not in use, never store with the blades exposed.

-          Avoid placing knives near the edge of a countertop.

-          Keep talking and other distractions to a minimum when using knives or other sharp utensils.

Kitchen Fire Prevention:

-          Never leave your cooking unattended.

-          Make sure clothes aren’t too loose fitting– hanging sleeves may drape into pans or open flames.

-          Use lower heat settings in order to cook food more thoroughly and safely.

-          Do not place metal or foil in a microwave oven.

-          Always keep the fan on in the vent-hood when cooking.

-          Check burners, ovens, and appliances to make sure they are off after you finish cooking.
